Telegraph: Evolution of Technology

The creation of the telegraph was revolutionary in the evolution of modern day technology. In 1838, the telegraph was created predeceased by the creation of morse code. Furthermore, the creation of the battery in 1800 and the electro-magnet in 1825 allowed for this rapid modernization. This combination compensated for the lack of technological development;  the lack of voice over this communication was replaced with Morse Code. This revolutionized everything, even education. Children were learning morse code, as it was key to communication over long distances. This also required a huge governmental step in connecting key communications. This was costly, however, it ultimately led to the fastest form of communication that people have ever seen. This furthered the idea discussed in class that the simple ideas will prevail.

To reflect on the creative process and the social environment , of objective #1. The telegraph was created under very harsh circumstances. The creator of the telegraph, Samuel Morse, searched and worked for years to understand a new form of communication. Prior to this experimenting, Morse was away from home when his wife was extremely ill. His family wrote to him telling him of his wife’s poor condition, however, the letter didn’t reach him in time. By the time Morse returned home, his wife had already passed away. Thus, he strived to create a faster form of communication. This led to his revolutionizing development of the the telegraph. Ultimately, the harsh circumstances that Morse was subjected to pushed him to develop the telegraph. One can argue that these harsh conditions were the reason for this development. The social need for speed of communication is promoted by industrialization and the size of the country. Especially with the rise of railroads, people were more physically connected over large areas. But the lack of rapid communication lacked for the development of transportation.

Learning objective #4 is to explain the advantages and limitations of digital representation in a historical as well as modern context. The telegraph emulates this very well because their were strong and clear benefits to the development of the telegraph. For example, the east and west coast of America were connected by October 1861. This allowed news to reach the country as a whole within minutes. Furthermore, soon enough the US was connected with Europe which allowed the US to be more involved with all of Europe. This was limited by the lack of voice communication over oong distances, so it is at will to be fraudulent. Although lines were implemented by governments, the could have been tapped or hijacked allowing people to send false communications, that could be harmful to the public. This was seen all throughout World War 1. However, for a brief period of time in the cell phone world it was still not discernable who was on the other side of the phone, due to the noise. Once phones were more developed it became very clear, but once AI has come to the point it has today we still see falsifcations. Someone could easily imitate someones voice using AI and we see this all over the internet today, increasing the public worry of malinformation.
