This week in class. . .
Law & Medicine. . . What Next?
AI is being used in new in all new and different industries. This week in class we discussed the usage of AI in the medicinal and law world. In law AI can be used to read through cases and history. This eliminates the time consuming read throughs that lawyers need to do for each and every case. However, this eliminates many entry level jobs for law. Furthermore, in the medicinal world AI is being used to determine what medicines might be good to treat certain conditions. Based on chemical composition the AI can determine what may be a good candidate for treatment. This will boost the speed of medicinal development and can push robots into doing the actual science. If this is pushed further, it may eliminate the need for biomedical engineers as a whole.
This discussion brought the class into a provoking argument, “Can AI generate art”?. Within the discussion we brought up how AI can generate something that looks like an art piece, however, it changes how we define art. We, as a class, defined art as an expression of a persons feelings or emotions. This eliminates the idea that AI can make “art”. However, an art piece can mean something different to every individual that views it, so that brings up the question if it is completely subjective. This is very thought provoking, however, ultimately I came to the decision that AI cannot make art. This is because I feel that art needs to be an expression, and AI cannot produce an expression, due to its lack of emotion.
One of the course learning outcomes in this class is to “formulate and defend a position on the benefits and liabilities associated with an object, concept or process that has become digital, relative to its pre-digital existence. Your position must include an interdisciplinary perspective”(8). My position is that AI cannot should not interfere with any art forms because they require artistic expression. The idea of AI artists and actors is mind boggling. We as individuals, value the art that people produce, and it has been a way for modern historians to view the ideas of generations. Digitizing art destroys the culture that artists emulate throughout our generation and all generations to come. AI will produce things that are intriguing to all people, but that is just the trick. AI produces something that is knowingly going to interest people because it does the research of exactly what people like. This removes all the expression that is associated in art and removes the personal feelings that are associated with modern day society. I believe that if we allow AI to infiltrate the art industry, we will destroy the culture of human expression that has existed for all of human existence. Art has been a way for people to communicate their feelings which are often feelings of society as a whole. If this is formulated completely by AI, who knows how much society is missing out on? This will destroy the market for artists, and they are already in a struggling field. Artists often do not gain the recognition that they seek and if we allow AI enter the industry it will take over. It is impossible for people to compete with AI, which is programmed to make things that people like. It’s a scary thought that AI could be controlling art within out society.
