Evolution of Technology

This week in class we discussed the evolution of technology including the telegraph and morse code. Morse code was the first step towards the advancement in technology. This tech was invented because the creator sadly missed the death of his wife due to the delay in communication. He thought if there was a simple way to communicate it would be easily transmitted over larger locations. This would’ve allowed him to get notice of his wife’s ailment and possibly see her before her death. This furthered the idea that it is the simple ideas that prevail.

In 1800 Alexander Volta created the 1st battery allowing for energy to be stored in small areas. Furthermore, the Electro-magnet was created by William Sturgeon in 1825. These inventions allowed the telegraph to prevail.

The creation of the telegraph was the first form of electric communication and was only able to show text, using morse code. This allowed for simple messages to be conveyed but the telephone would soon come and allow for the delivery of voice/noise. With this new developed there needed to be wires connecting all places that were exchanging telegraph messages. This made the telegraph harder to deliver, because there was now a large public need for wires.

The connection of wires from building to building soon became very popularized and it became normalized to understand morse code. Many people in schools learned the letters of the alphabet in morse code, furthering the growth and normalization of this new tech. By October of 1861, the west and east coast of America were connected via tech.

This tech was a prime example of using the adaptability of the human mind to compensate for the lack of technological development. This is because the use of morse code, allowed for communication of pretty much dashes and dots. This compensated for the fact that technology didn’t allow for the transmission of voice, only nodes.
